Industrial Air Filtration System Troubleshooting
When an existing dust, fume or mist collection system is not performing as expected, replacing the collector is not always the answer. Poor capture can come from many different parts of the system.
I help manufacturers evaluate existing filtration systems, identify where performance may be breaking down, and determine whether the problem is related to capture, ductwork, airflow, filtration, controls, maintenance or changes in the production process.
Sometimes the Collector Is Not the Problem
A collector can have adequate filter area and fan capacity on paper and still deliver poor results at the process. The entire airflow path—from the point of capture to the exhaust—needs to work together.
Before recommending major equipment replacement, it is often worth understanding what the existing system is actually doing and how the application may have changed since it was originally installed.
Common Signs Something Is Wrong
Poor Capture
Dust, fume or mist escapes the hood, extraction arm, machine enclosure or work area even though the collector appears to be operating.
Visible Facility Haze
Airborne particulate continues to accumulate throughout the building despite an existing source-capture or ambient-filtration system.
High Filter Usage
Filters require replacement much more frequently than expected, increasing operating cost and maintenance demand.
Uneven Airflow
Some drops perform well while others have very little suction, often indicating balancing, duct-design or pressure-loss issues.
Energy or Noise Concerns
A system may be moving more air than necessary, operating continuously at full speed, or using a control strategy that no longer matches production.
The Process Changed
Additional machines, welding stations, production shifts or material changes may have increased the contaminant load beyond what the original system was designed to handle.
Follow the Airflow Path
Troubleshooting works best when the system is evaluated as a complete airflow path rather than a collection of individual components.
A restriction, poor hood design, incorrect branch size or unexpected pressure loss upstream can create a capture problem that appears to be a collector problem downstream.
What I Look At
Capture Point
Is the hood, extraction arm, enclosure or machine connection positioned and sized appropriately for the contaminant being generated?
Ductwork
Branch sizes, fittings, transport velocity, dampers, added drops and pressure loss can all influence how much airflow actually reaches the process.
Collector & Filters
Filter condition, differential pressure, cleaning performance, media selection and accumulated material can affect both airflow and operating cost.
Fan & Controls
Fan performance, rotation, speed, control settings and system resistance determine whether the intended airflow can be delivered.
Measure Instead of Guess
When appropriate, airflow, pressure and airborne-particulate measurements can help separate assumptions from actual system performance.

Verify whether the intended volume of air is actually reaching the hood, machine or extraction point.
Static Pressure
Identify unexpected system resistance and determine where pressure losses may be occurring.
Airborne Particulate
Where useful, compare facility conditions at different locations and operating conditions to better understand the problem.
Repair, Modify or Replace?
Once the cause of poor performance is better understood, the solution may be much smaller than replacing the entire system—or it may become clear that the original equipment is no longer suited to the application.
Improve the Existing System

- Optimize fan or control settings
Expand or Replace
- Add capacity for increased production
